Why Earlier Sound-Analysis Alarm Systems Failed – and Why Sonis Works

Several European security companies evaluated early “sound-analysis” intrusion systems in the mid-2010s. These systems attempted to detect break-ins by analysing general room audio. While innovative for their time, they suffered from fundamental technical limitations that made false alarms unavoidable.

Early systems listened to all sounds in a room – conversations, TV, appliances, footsteps, pets, wind, pipes, and environmental noise. This created unavoidable problems:

  • Overlapping acoustic signatures
  • High variability between rooms and furnishings
  • Noisy environments overwhelming classifiers

This made false alarms inevitable.

The systems relied on early-generation machine learning models that required clean audio conditions, struggled with multi-source noise, and could not reliably separate normal sounds from threats. This resulted in frequent false alarms.

These systems treated sound as a continuous stream rather than identifying specific mechanical events associated with forced entry. They lacked event segmentation, impact-signature modelling, and frequency-domain pattern isolation.

Why Sonis Works

Sonis does not analyse general room noise. Instead, it detects the specific acoustic signature of forced entry—a narrow, predictable, repeatable mechanical pattern that is unaffected by voices, TV, or daily life. This is why Sonis achieves high precision with near-zero false alarms.

The technology activates before entry and covers all doors and windows simultaneously.
